Social Discovery & Community Platform

Designing a safer way for strangers to connect through shared interests and real-world experiences.

Overview

Most social platforms help users consume content. Few successfully help strangers build genuine relationships in the real world. Our goal was to design an experience where people could discover like-minded individuals nearby, communicate safely, organize meetups, and build trusted communities while minimizing spam, harassment and unsafe interactions. The platform combined social networking, local discovery, community moderation, event planning, rewards, and blockchain-inspired incentives into one ecosystem.

The Challenge

Designing another social feed wasn't difficult. Designing a platform where strangers could safely meet offline was.

Every interaction had to answer questions like :

• Why should users trust strangers?

• How can spam invitations be prevented?

• How do we stop harassment?

• How do we help introverts break the ice?

• How should groups moderate themselves?

• How do businesses benefit?

• How do we reward positive behavior?

• How can one product support both social networking and real-world events?

How We Solved It

How each product challenge was translated into a practical,
scalable user experience.

Finding the Right People

Traditional social apps rely on followers. Our platform relied on interests.

Users selected :

• Interests
• Age preference
• Gender preference
• Location

Instead of manually finding people, the system automatically created nearby groups based on compatibility.

Work Done

Designed an intelligent onboarding flow that generated communities using shared interests and proximity.

Users could also:

• Join existing groups
• Discover nearby communities
• Search public groups
• Request entry into private groups

Preventing Spam & Unwanted Messages

The inbox treated every message equally, making it easy for spam and low-effort messages to overwhelm meaningful conversations.

The Solution

As a team, we introduced a three-state inbox to encourage genuine interactions and reduce spam.

Favorites – Mutual hearts unlock unlimited conversations, with only 3 available slots.
Open Threads – Unanswered messages gradually shorten the reply window, discouraging spam.
Expired – Inactive conversations can be revived using points or referrals while preserving message history.

The Impact

Reduced spam through built-in friction.
Encouraged meaningful connections with mutual Favorites.
Improved clarity by making conversation states easy to understand.

Helping Strangers Break the Ice

Meeting strangers is uncomfortable. People rarely know how to begin conversations. Instead of expecting conversations to happen naturally,

We introduced:

• Ice-breaker games
• Group activities
• Community challenges

These experiences encouraged interaction before meaningful conversations started.

Organizing Real-World Events

Once groups formed, they needed somewhere to meet. We designed a complete event ecosystem.

Users could :

• Create events
• Invite members
• Discover restaurants
• View nearby attractions
• Compare ratings
• Search by interest
• Redeem rewards
• Split bills

Restaurants could publish offers, creating a B2B marketplace alongside the community platform.

The Profile That Tells Your Story

Groups gave people a tribe. Events gave them a reason to meet. Nearby Matches gave them chance encounters. But when someone discovered me, what would they actually see? We designed the profile as a living story.

Users could showcase:

• Stars earned as Star of the Event
• Contributions from volunteer roles
• Interests validated by the community
• Tags given by real members
• Footprints from every country visited
• Trips with photos, videos, and notes

Travel companions on each trip Reviews from people they'd actually met. Fellow travellers nearby could discover each other, sharing trips instead of taking them alone, turning the profile into both a resume and an invitation — a passport for the Groupalike community.
